Planners vs Hedonists Sep 22, 2008

Kid eating a marshmallow. Click here to read more on the marshmallow study. An interesting study on children who put off instant gratification vs the ones that want it RIGHT NOW.  Over a long period of time (these tests started in the 1960s) they discovered that the Planners did better in life overall.  The Hedonists were more likely to be caught up in financial ruin, addiction and sickness.

It's interesting to me that studies back up what we've known all along. Long term thinking is always better than short term rewards.  If we had kept this in mind, we wouldn't be mired in this current financial crisis.

Let go of your stress Jan 03, 2008

I'm very proud to say that my room is now clutter free. My extra stacks of papers and pens are put away, my DVDs have their place in the house, and I've gained more desk space. When I read that clutter can effect your physical and mental health, I had to agree. After a month of radically cutting out the excess in my life, I find myself enjoying quiet moments, and being able to focus on what is most important. It took a big change in my thinking to get everything clean. I learned to look at everything that I own but not use as stress. It's a ball of barbwire rolling around my house and mind. That helped me let go and put my items on eBay, and I'm glad to say I made a nice little sum of money! If you've been thinking about cleaning up your act this year, NOW is always the best time. If you have a good organization tip or story, please share it with me in the comments section.

Live forever Aug 23, 2007

Inspired by a book on Bruce Lee, (and my goal to get a six pack by January) I started a routine of running around the track of a nearby middle school. This is a big step for me because I've always hated running. Surprisingly, I've been doing it consistently, and improving my performance at the same time. Most importantly, I'm enjoying it, and I even feel the runner's high people talk about. So here's what I've learned so far: Get a good pair of shoes. Apparently, if you have high arches, the outsides of your shoes get worn out. If you have flat feet, the insides get worn out first. A good pair of shoes makes all the difference in the world. ANYONE can run ANYWHERE I felt self conscious when I started. I didn't want to look like a fool who didn't know what he was doing. Thankfully, I was wrong and running is great for everyone. The people who share the tracks vary from the beginners to the elite, yet nobody feels out of place. If you don't have a track nearby, all you need is a pair of shoes and some land. (sorry submarine dwellers) You'll sleep better at night I've enjoyed some of the best sleep these past few weeks. Running makes food taste better Run just before dinner and you'll have the best dinner you've had in your life. Stale bread will taste like cheesecake. I promise. That's it for now. Six pack or bust!

And now a word about sleep Mar 19, 2007

On my notepad where I try to capture random thoughts, my barely legible handwriting reads

"The moment between being awake and being asleep is so pleasurable".

It must have been a really good nap for me to commit that thought to pen and paper. This time change has really been bad for my work schedule. I've been getting up late, going to work late, and getting home late. It's time to give the ol' body a break. If this article from the "sleepfoundation" hits close to home, maybe you should hit the sack too.

Who I am

I'm Derek Chin and I'm very happy to be here. Life is a journey and an adventure, and I tend to be the "Big Picture" guy. (I ask silly questions like: "How does this help me and society in the long run?") I have lofty ideals and goals, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. This is a personal blog, so please excuse the tangents I go on, or the type of language I use once in a fucking while. I enjoy making music, doodling, and movie-hopping. Yeah I do.

What I do

XHTML/CSS/PHP/JS/MySQL/Ruby(on Rails) is the name of the game. I've had a great experience at very different companies and environments.
