Getting into the Zone Dec 30, 2008

I'm halfway through my new book entitled Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (P.S.) but I had to share what I read so far.  Flow is that experience you have where you are so focused on something that time seems to fly by.  This state of flow could happen when you're drawing, reading, or even having a conversation with friends.

This state is not only where we get the most enjoyment, but it is also where we are the most productive.  It's a state of mind that anyone, regardless of status can reach. Unfortunately, it is also something that many people sporadically get to.  I have to admit that this is something I've been struggling with.  You can see why this book is so interesting to me.

Rather than being a step-by-step how-to book, Flow gives many examples of how different people achieve this state.  You can achieve flow anywhere and doing anything.  So my goal for the new year is to get into this state as often as possible.  But more importantly, I want to get into the flow with important activities. (Who wants to be efficient and productive doing nonsense?)

Who I am

I'm Derek Chin and I'm very happy to be here. Life is a journey and an adventure, and I tend to be the "Big Picture" guy. (I ask silly questions like: "How does this help me and society in the long run?") I have lofty ideals and goals, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. This is a personal blog, so please excuse the tangents I go on, or the type of language I use once in a fucking while. I enjoy making music, doodling, and movie-hopping. Yeah I do.

What I do

XHTML/CSS/PHP/JS/MySQL/Ruby(on Rails) is the name of the game. I've had a great experience at very different companies and environments.
