The highlight of my day. No... Week. May 21, 2009
Nobody sets off fireworks in the middle of February. Nobody makes promises to themselves to improve their lives in June. Nobody sits down to tally up their wins or losses in September. Why don't we?
Who decided that it is appropriate to recognize every 365.25 days as milestones? It seems a little silly since none of us know where we will be on day 365. Life is short and I don't want to wait.
Why not re-evaluate our lives on a daily basis? Why not celebrate every 24 hours? Why not look to tomorrow (literally) with anticipation and excitement? I can't think of a reason not to.
I'm very happy to officially announce that my new project is Live and ready for alpha testing. The idea for Mist4kes.com came about because I wanted a place to put up things that weren't necessarily ready for this site. This could mean my little comic projects, or just blog posts that needed more fleshing out or polishing before putting them here.
When I mentioned this to my friend Jay (a Ruby on Rails Guru), he encouraged me to make this a community site based on Ruby on Rails. I had to agree that it was a good challenge, and might be fun if I had a place where people could come and share their mistakes.
Almost 2 months later, this site is ready to be used by the bravest of the brave. So if that is you, I hope you'll take some time to share some of your experiments or foibles. Trying to bake a cake? Build a website? Plan a vacation? Write a poem? You're probably going to stumble along the way... but if you post your mistakes and what you've learned, we can all benefit from your experiences.
I'm halfway through my new book entitled Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (P.S.) but I had to share what I read so far. Flow is that experience you have where you are so focused on something that time seems to fly by. This state of flow could happen when you're drawing, reading, or even having a conversation with friends.
This state is not only where we get the most enjoyment, but it is also where we are the most productive. It's a state of mind that anyone, regardless of status can reach. Unfortunately, it is also something that many people sporadically get to. I have to admit that this is something I've been struggling with. You can see why this book is so interesting to me.
Rather than being a step-by-step how-to book, Flow gives many examples of how different people achieve this state. You can achieve flow anywhere and doing anything. So my goal for the new year is to get into this state as often as possible. But more importantly, I want to get into the flow with important activities. (Who wants to be efficient and productive doing nonsense?)
I'm Derek Chin and I'm very happy to be here. Life is a journey and an adventure, and I tend to be the "Big Picture" guy. (I ask silly questions like: "How does this help me and society in the long run?") I have lofty ideals and goals, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. This is a personal blog, so please excuse the tangents I go on, or the type of language I use once in a fucking while. I enjoy making music, doodling, and movie-hopping. Yeah I do.
XHTML/CSS/PHP/JS/MySQL/Ruby(on Rails) is the name of the game. I've had a great experience at very different companies and environments.
Here is a complete list of my work. I am currently available to take on projects. Contact me.
