Charm snowboards for the first time Dec 28, 2008

Notice the pileup behind her... the chaos left in her wake is quite typical. She actually did pretty well, and I'm sure we'll do this again when she's all healed. What a fun and eventful weekend.

I'm happy to report that my super-secret-yet-to-be-announced project is coming along nicely. It started off pretty slowly, but I'm picking up speed. It's still ugly to look at, but at least I'm steadily knocking out functionality. It's weird that I've made more progress this last two days than I'd made in the last two weeks.
Ahh, the fun of learning a new skill. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving day!
My first real experience at a start-up has finally come to an end. It is a great product that had very bad timing. I expected us to weather the storm, but I did not expect my last day to be last week. I put in some crazy hours, worked around multiple changes, and made some friends along the way.
It hasn't been a total loss because I've learned a few things:
All in all, it's been a positive experience. I hope it does well, and maybe I'll have a chance to work there again. In the meantime, it's back to ronin work on the WWW.
This part of the year is all about transition. The world waits for a new president to take over, and I'm waiting to see where I'll be working next year. I'm not very good about waiting for stuff to happen, so I've been keeping myself busy with big plans.
Whenever I have big plans, my blog seems to suffer.
I want this website to be updated continually, but I don't want this blog to just be a blog of links to other blog. I want it to house my thoughts and observations, but I want my words and pictures to be fully developed before they go up. At the same time I'd like to present something new everyday.
So for this reason, I'm going to update the Ephemera part of my blog (on the top right of this site) every day. It's going to have interesting links that I think you should check out. My comics and posts will slow down a little, but the quality will improve.
This will give me some extra time to work on my big project. I've worked with a lot of guys with big plans, and I think I've come up with my own. I'm really excited about this, and I hope to give you some details soon. Thanks for reading, stay tuned!
I really believe cancer is beatable without chemotheraphy.
I'm Derek Chin and I'm very happy to be here. Life is a journey and an adventure, and I tend to be the "Big Picture" guy. (I ask silly questions like: "How does this help me and society in the long run?") I have lofty ideals and goals, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. This is a personal blog, so please excuse the tangents I go on, or the type of language I use once in a fucking while. I enjoy making music, doodling, and movie-hopping. Yeah I do.
XHTML/CSS/PHP/JS/MySQL/Ruby(on Rails) is the name of the game. I've had a great experience at very different companies and environments.
Here is a complete list of my work. I am currently available to take on projects. Contact me.
